Job Description:
This is the second craft level of the Substation Technician hierarchy. A Substation Technician I will assist a higher level technician and sometimes safely lead a lower level technician in activities associated with substation construction and maintenance activities. Incumbents are expected to develop complex technical and leadership skills and the ability to work independently and lead small activities with low to moderate levels of complexity.
Job Responsibilities:
- Clear understanding of regulatory compliance and the importance for accurate data and timely completion of assigned work
- Can assist with the installation of portable/mobile substations/transformers or other temporary equipment
- Advanced understanding of reading prints and determine how to isolate protection circuits without jeopardizing critical equipment
- Demonstrate the ability to operate bucket, digger derrick truck other areal devices
- Ability to respond to minor call outs
- Demonstrate a complete understanding of Human Performance practices
- Demonstrate the ability to safely lead small jobs and work independent of direct leadership
- Demonstrate the ability to methodically/logically organize substation work activities
- Can organize construction and maintenance work and create over all implementation/maintenance plans
- Demonstrate a complete understanding of company safety rules and work practices
- Ability to perform infrared scanning substation equipment
- Basic understanding of power factor, winding resistance, circuit breaker timing, and leakage reactance testing and interpret results
- Understands limitations, never assumes, and will STOP to seek help
- Adheres to Duke policies and procedures to meet regulatory requirements (NERC and/or SERC), properly and accurately documents test results with a timely completion
- Advanced understanding of AC and DC circuit principles
- Can lead small and low risk maintenance or construction projects
Job Requirements:
- Must be capable of working on elevated work surfaces
- Demonstrated ability to pass panel review by meeting or exceeding requirements for step progression
- Ability to pass any required background check for NERC/CIP/Nuclear compliance
- Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
- Provides lower level of leadership
- Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally
- Demonstrated availability for after- hour’s work and call out rotation
- Has positive working relationships and can effectively coordinate work activities
- Ability to work in a diverse environment with individuals from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds
- Advanced understanding of job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance
- Must pass appropriate level of Duke aptitude test
- Demonstrate the ability to developing leadership skills
- Must have a valid State Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a CDL Class A Driver’s License
